Improve English Through Musical Theatre – Taught in Mandarin
A Musical Journey to Better English
This class is designed for budding young performers aged 7–9 who love to sing, dance, and act — or are eager to try something new! Conducted in Mandarin, it uses the exciting world of musical theatre to help children improve their English in a fun, engaging, and confidence-building environment.
Through weekly classes, students will explore musical storytelling, learn choreography, and perform scenes and songs — all while developing their English vocabulary, pronunciation, and speaking skills. Whether your child is naturally expressive or a little shy, our supportive teaching team will guide them to find their voice, work as a team, and shine on stage.
Perfect for children who enjoy music, movement, and creativity, this class combines the joy of performance with the power of language learning — making English come alive through every song and scene.

In Sing’theatre Academy, our academic year is split into two semesters, Semester 1 (14 weeks – Aug to Dec) & Semester 2 (20 weeks – Jan to Jun).
Semester 1
In this unique musical theatre class conducted in Mandarin, students begin their journey by developing core performance skills — singing, dancing, and acting — while building confidence in using English. Semester 1 focuses on helping students understand and enjoy the techniques behind musical theatre, giving them the foundation they need to eventually perform in a full-scale show.
Semester 2
In Semester 2, students put their skills into action by rehearsing and performing a full-scale musical in English. Scripts are carefully selected to ensure every child has a meaningful role in stories they enjoy — past shows include The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, and Seussical the Musical.
Weekly Lesson Plans
Each week, students will explore songs and scenes from well-loved musicals that spark excitement and encourage language learning through performance. Our carefully designed curriculum uses storytelling, rhythm, and movement to help children naturally pick up English vocabulary, pronunciation, and expression — all in a fun, supportive environment.
No two weeks are the same! One week might focus on singing in English with clear diction, another on learning a group dance routine, and another on expressing character emotions through English dialogue — all guided in Mandarin to support understanding and build confidence.
Goals for Semester 1
The goal this semester is to build students’ foundational performance skills in singing, dancing, and acting — while helping them grow more confident using English on stage. These tools will prepare them for Semester 2, where they’ll work towards performing a full musical production.
End-of-Semester Class Presentation
At the end of the term, students will share a selection of performance highlights from the semester in a casual showcase for family and friends — celebrating both their artistic growth and their progress in English, all through the joy of musical theatre.

This advanced course is designed exclusively for students with prior experience in AMTC or Showstopper, offering a deeper exploration of acting techniques, ensemble work, and performance artistry. Students will analyze script and song and integrate their research in performances of small group numbers, focusing on character development, emotional authenticity, and dynamic storytelling.
A key emphasis of the course is navigating diverse group dynamics, fostering collaboration, and building strong ensemble connections. Students will learn how to harmonize their individual contributions with the group’s overall performance, creating cohesive and impactful scenes. Whether exploring layered relationships in a duet or bringing vibrant energy to a trio or small group, participants will deepen their understanding of teamwork and elevate their artistry through shared creative expression.
Course Objectives
What happens in The Spotlighters course? The Spotlighters is designed to give adult performers the full experience of rehearsing and performing musical theatre songs and scenes live on stage, while developing essential skills in singing, dancing, and acting.
At its heart, this course is about ensemble work—collaborating with others, building confidence, and sharing the spotlight. You’ll rehearse and perform full ensemble numbers, as well as small group scenes (typically 3–4 performers), giving everyone meaningful stage time without the pressure of carrying a solo or lead role. Our teacher carefully selects material that supports your individual growth while challenging you in a way that feels both exciting and achievable.
Throughout the 12 weeks, your teacher will guide you through a variety of musical theatre songs and scenes designed to strengthen your singing, dancing, and acting skills. Through ensemble numbers and small group work, you’ll develop confidence, technique, and stage presence as you rehearse for the final performance.
The course begins with ensemble work to build group cohesion, before moving into smaller scene groups tailored to each performer. As the showcase approaches, students are encouraged to rehearse outside of class to prepare for a polished and exciting performance on stage.
At the end of the 12 weeks, you’ll take to the stage in our Blackbox theatre for a fully directed musical theatre showcase. It’s a magical, intimate performance in front of a supportive audience of friends and family—your moment to shine.

Developing the skills to sing, dance and act is very important and we dedicate time to giving students techniques and confidence in all three skills to be able to put into practice when they perform in a full show.
Every week students will work on songs and scenes from engaging and popular musicals that get them excited to learn and perform. This unique syllabus designed by our Academy team gets students excited to learn and allows us to hone in on the techniques required for musical theatre.
Each week will be different for example one week we will look at singing harmonies, the next a group dance and perhaps the last looking at vocal projection and acting skills all through the lens of fun songs and scenes from popular musicals
The aim for this semester is to improve skills in Singing, Dance and Acting so they can be better equipped for semester 2 when they present a full-scale musical .
At the end of the semester, our Mini Stars will gather selected performance items from their classes this semester to showcase to friends and family at our end of term showcase.

Our teachers find scripts and stories that allow for our students to be featured equally and tell stories they care and are excited about. Previous shows include: The Wizard Of OZ, Alice In Wonderland, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and Seussical the Musical.
Every week, students will be involved in rehearsing scenes and songs for the show with understudy roles and production roles assigned to students not in each scene to ensure that all students are engaged at all points of the rehearsal process.
Weaved into the rehearsal process will be skills and techniques appropriate to the characters and scenes the students are portraying ensuring learning and development is happening alongside the rehearsal process.
The goal of this semester is to transform everything the students have learnt into a full musical performance, where they don’t just practise the skills — they become the characters, tell the story, and bring the stage to life. This semester focuses on teamwork, commitment, and building stage confidence as students experience the joy and challenge of putting on a complete show — from the first rehearsal to the final bow.
Students get to perform in a full-scale musical in our Black Box Theatre. With professional sets made by industry experts, professional lighting and sound and beautiful costumes our shows are a magical and intimate experience performing to a supportive audience of friends and family.

Our Show Semester is where our Broadway stars plus will be cast in an exciting 1-hour musical that is tailored to the level, ability and environment of Sing’theatre academy. All our shows are ensemble based giving every student an opportunity on stage that matches their current ability and as much time on stage as possible.
Previous shows include: The Wizard Of OZ, Alice In Wonderland, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and Seussical the Musical.
Our weekly lessons will be tailored to not only rehearse the songs and scenes from the show but to continue to enhance students’ skills though challenging choreography, vocals and direction. Students will be expected to have a high level of commitment to classes, taking notes during rehearsals and practicing lines and blockings at home to ensure they can get the most out of each rehearsal.
Our teachers will tailor the direction of the show to make sure we are not only showcasing the skills of each student but challenging them too helping their growth and development though the process.

Our Showcase semester is uniquely designed to develop our Broadway Stars Plus Triple Threat skills, bringing together their Singing, Dancing and Acting skills alongside their stagecraft and stage discipline too. Broadway stars Plus will have a uniquely designed curriculum that will give each student material that will challenge them and take their skills to the next level. We will explore both modern and classic musicals to give students an understanding of musical theatre history along the way. The showcase for this semester will be a live audition done infront of firends and family allowing students to showcase their skills and challenge themselves in an audition environment.
Throughout the semester Broadway Stars plus will experience weekly workshops targeted at improving specific skills needed to improve their performance. We will go through skills like acting through song, monologue selection, Audition preparation, Specific vocal techniques, song selection, dance styles, musical theatre history and industry skills.
Students will be expected to prepare for classes in advance and be dedicated to researching and learning all material needed for classes.
The goal for this semester is process driven but along the way students will prepare for their live audition Infront of an audience. It is important that the Broadway stars plus spend time to hone their skills rather than just always focusing on the show or end-product so throughout the semester they will be encouraged to reflect on their own learning journey and progress.
For Broadway Stars Plus the end product of this semester will be an audition that students will prepare for themselves that will be performed Infront of a live audience. This challenge will make sure that students can take on all the learning done in this semesters classes and independently bring together their own learning and skills in this challenging environment.

The repertory pathway will take 9 performers through the process of devising, creating, writing and performing a brand new musical revue in response to the COVID19 pandemic. The performers will work with director TJ Taylor on collecting real-life stories from Singapore and develop monologues, scenes and songs inspired from the events of Circuit Breaker. The 9 performers will work as an ensemble reparatory company working closely together developing a meaningful performance that will be presented in a virtual production at the end of the course. Students will get to be involved in not only the performance, but creation, direction and design of the final production, taking ownership and pride in creating a new theatrical work.
The course is most suited to performers with some prior experience in performing as there will be more time given to creation and performance than skills development.
Devising, acting and dance rehearsals will be live at the Sing’theatre studios but singing will be rehearsed through 1-1 sessions arranged at alternative timings.
The final show will be recorded or presented live to public audience through either Zoom or a live stream platform.

Hailing from the sunny island of Singapore, Vanessa Kee is an actress, singer, dancer, and musician, who aspires to encourage empathy through her work.
During her time at LASALLE, she was awarded both the prestigious Future Leaders Scholarship and the LASALLE Scholarship through her motivation and dedication as an artist. Her most notable lead roles while pursuing her education include playing the titular role Aida in AIDA the musical (Dir. Joe Barros), and Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof (Dir. Emily Maltby).
Upon graduating in 2019 with a First Class Honors Degree in Musical Theatre, Vanessa delved into the professional theater world with her debut in Pangdemonium’s newest musical, Urinetown (Dir. Tracie Pang), followed by a lead role in Sing’Theatre’s very own Asian premier of West End’s A Spoonful of Sherman (Dir. TJ Taylor), where she was privileged to work with Singapore’s best theater veterans.
An extensive piano and choir background have allowed Vanessa to develop a strong sense of musicality and experience, having taught her first musical theater classes before graduation. She has amassed many students while teaching adult and children classes with multiple studios, including private classes. Vanessa thoroughly enjoys sharing the love of musical theater with people of all ages and is excited to aid others in honing their skills and passion for the art form.
Vanessa is grateful for the generosity she has received through her journey and is thrilled to be joining Sing’Theatre’s amazing teaching team – to pay it forward to those who share the love of performance.

TJ Taylor is a teacher, director, performer and musician, currently based in Singapore. In 2013 he graduated from the UK with a First-Class Hons. Degree in Musical Theatre and has worked in the Arts industry in Singapore ever since. TJ is now the Head Teacher of Sing Theatre Musical Theatre Academy as well as lecturing part time at Lasalle College of the Arts on their Musical Theatre Degree course.
TJ’s passion for his work comes from his performing experience which has recently included theatrical works at Universal Studios Singapore as a Show Host, several professional theatre in education shows and musically as a pianist, accompanist and singer.
As an educator TJ is passionate about instilling a professional approach to all performance education and expects commitment, enthusiasm and hard work from all his students and performers. His singing teaching focuses on the performer gaining the technical knowledge to effortlessly adapt into creating the most appropriate performance choices. He is also a creative and engaging performance coach and director who has been at the helm of many student musical theatre productions as well as successfully coaching students for both professional castings and theatre school auditions.
Singing lessons focusing on developing strong, safe and versatile vocal technique
Everyone can sing….but to be a ‘Singer,’ mastery and understanding of vocal technique is key!
TJ has taught singing around world to students of all ages and abilities. The focus of his teaching is to train the student to understand the physical process of singing so they can easily manipulate their voice into any genre of music. Once a student has a firm basis of their technique, he then helps the singer develop style, emotion and characterisation.
TJ teaches most genres of singing however his specialty is musical theatre. Combining voice technique with acting techniques, TJ merges the two disciplines to help the singer make appropriate vocal choices that reflect the acting and performance needs of the song. Having trained and worked as a performer as well as sitting on many audition panels, he can help students create the perfect performance or audition song that is grounded in technique and confidence.
TJ currently lectures voice technique and musical theatre repertoire classes on the Musical Theatre Degree at Lasalle College of the Arts Singapore. He also teaches private lessons both to beginners and professional performers across Singapore, helping them understand their voice and nail their performance.
