CABARET WORKSHOP AT ALLIANCE FRANCAISE
25 June 2018
On the 23rd of June, in conjunction with International Music Day hosted by Alliance Francaise, 14 of our cabaret workshop attendees sang, danced, and performed their hearts out to an audience of almost 200. At first glance, this seems like nothing out of the ordinary. But when you take into consideration the very brief 15 hours it took to piece together this 20-minute cabaret performance, it truly becomes something quite extraordinary.
The Cabaret Workshop began only on Monday, cramming an intensive bootcamp-style musical theatre program in 15 hours over the span of 5 days. The participants came from varying backgrounds, with some performers never having stepped onto a stage prior to their performance at the Alliance Francaise theatre.
The show was entirely devised during the workshop itself and inspired by the mix of Singaporeans and French workshop participants, including a few famous French songs, such as La Vie en Rose and Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son alongside well-known Singaporean hits like Home and a traditional folk song, Bunga Sayang.
The cabaret workshop definitely offered more than just musical theatre training, it also became a socio-cultural mixer of sorts; workshop participants went home with a better understanding of local and French culture while also making more like-minded friends in the process, offering something for everyone, young or old, French or Singaporean.
